🐝 #AmBeedProductSpotlight | Harnessing light to drive electron transfer: acridinium salts are an important class of organic photoredox catalysts, widely recognized for their strong excited-state oxidative power and applications in visible-light-driven synthetic transformations.

The development of acridinium photoredox catalysis traces back to Shunichi Fukuzumi and co-workers at Osaka University, who introduced the 9-mesityl-10-methylacridinium scaffold, commonly known as the Fukuzumi acridinium salt. (https://lnkd.in/gdj8PYEY)

Subsequent structural modifications by David A. Nicewicz and co-workers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill further improved catalyst stability and expanded the synthetic applications of acridinium-based photocatalysts.

Upon photoexcitation, acridinium salts act as potent single-electron oxidants, enabling the oxidation of arenes and alkenes. Moreover, the reduced acridyl radical can absorb a second photon to generate a highly reducing excited state, enabling challenging transformations such as haloarene reduction and sulfonamide desulfonylation. By combining strong photooxidizing properties, tunable molecular structures, and access to complementary photoredox pathways, acridinium-based catalysts provide versatile tools for synthetic methodology development and complex molecule functionalization.
